The fact that colleges are even considering allowing people to enroll there simply because of their athletic prowess alone frightens me. If this is allowed to pass, and we no longer base college acceptance on academic skill, then I fear for the future of our country. Colleges should be the place where the academically inclined go to further their knowledge of a particular field and prepare them to better handle the higher jobs of the world. College athletics is an important aspect of the college life for some people, but it should not be all they focus on. College has always been about academics first and sports second, not the other way around. If we let the unintelligent athletes into our most prestigious colleges simply because they can throw a ball well, or tackle somebody well, we’re not doing them any favors; we’re hurting them. We’re putting them into a situation in which they have no other skills accept sports, and taking up college enrollment places that could be used for people who actually want to go to college for the education. So what do we get? More athletes, less knowledgeable college graduations. What happens to the world then? What about the youths who could have gone to college to become tomorrow’s doctors or lawyers? No, sorry, their spots have already been taken up by someone who simply wants to cheat their way through college and throw a ball around for the rest of their lives. That’s not the future we should see. Colleges need to be reminded of what’s really important in life.
