Out of all of the worthy heroes listed on the CNN website, I believe that the person most deserving of the top spot is 54 year old Robin Lim. In her home country of Indonesia, the people face a plight whenever a new child is born into their family: not only must they wonder whether or not they will be able to deliver the baby safely, but also whether or not they will be able to pay the hospital bill. At a particular hospital in Bali, Indonesia, women who cannot pay the hospital bill are not allowed to take their babies home until the bill is paid in full. On the bright side, the mothers are allowed in twice a day to feed and change their babies, but the injustice still stands. Even if the bills cannot be paid, they have no right to keep these mothers from their newborn babies. Robin Lim acted out against this injustice by opening her own clinic able to deliver babies safely and without cost. In addition to their birthing services, Lim’s Yayasan Bumi Sehat clinics offer free medical aid and parental care to any who require it. In my opinion, what Lim is doing for her people is a great service that I think should be replicated in other parts of the world. I can understand that hospitals need money in order to stay open, but I honestly believe that health care and childbirth especially should be free of charge. It’s a shame when people have to worry about whether or not they will be able to pay for a service that keeps them alive.
